TWITTER is a fun way to promote online. I joined a few months ago and it’s been fun connecting with different people. I highly recommend it as another way of online promotion.

My name is LaShaunda C. Hoffman and I’d like to thank Chelle for having me and SORMAG here today. Here’s a little about me: I’m an aspiring Christian Fiction writer who is also the publisher of an online magazine called Shades Of Romance Magazine. SORMAG as I call it. http://sormag.com/ - http://sormag.blogspot.com I’m also a happily married mother of three and the caregiver of my mother.

My love for reading started at an early age of four. I don’t think a day goes by that I’m not reading something. I started blogging as a way to encourage myself to write more. http://lashaunda.blogspot.com

Writing is something I’ve enjoyed for years, trying to get published is a hard journey. However I encourage others to continue with their dream of publication. If you work hard and write good books, it will happen.

Writing a Synopsis

I think one of the things writers dread the most (after revising, rejection letters, and the dire state of how the economy will effect publishing- And that's the short list!)  is  writing a synopsis.

You've spent six months to a year slaving over your 100k or 50k or even 15K or 3k word master piece ad now you have to retell the whole epic in two to five single spaced pages. Say what??!!!?

Well recently, I had to write a synopsis for my historical western- Whispering Hope. I freaked. But after I calmed down I searched the web. Charlotte Dillion  had some great samples (I learn best from being shown.) One of the samples she had was so good, I bought the book! Which after all is the whole point.

So I wanted to share ( over a few post. I hope you come back to read them) about how I write a synopsis.

The first paragraph:

Start with either the hero or the heroine. Whomever the first person you're reader (at this point an editor or agent) will meet. I added in some personal background information. A few lines that sums up their personality and helps to set the tone for the story.

Highly successful, motivated Brittney has one weakness- bad boys. Her curvaceous body insures she never lacks for male attention. However most men are more interested in her double-d's than her business degree from Howard University. The only man she can count on to look above her assets to her brain is her best friend and business partner, Q.
-excerpt from No More Than Friend's synopsis.

or

There's not much Eliza can't handle. After being orphaned and left with three younger siblings to raise, she carved out a life on the Kansas plains. Even when she finds a wounded man in  her garden, Eliza does what's needed and uses her mother's medicines to pat up the stranger.
-excerpt from Whispering Hope
or

Judge Jackie Morris didn't get where she is without believing in herself. After a childhood spent watching her mother and her friends make bad choices in regards to men, Jackie put her personal life on hold to pursue her career. Now at forty,  her career right on track, she's single and ready to have a a serious relationship. Only becoming the district court's youngest female judge is a whole lot easier than finding a man not intimidated by her job.
-excerpt from WIP

We don't have much time to not only hook the reader but also to fill in the huge back story that brought us to the start of the story. So here's

- Who is the main character.
- Why they are who they are.
- What are the reasons they need the Hero.
- Where they are physically as well as emotionally.
- How will the story most likely play out. Sexy, funny, intense.

Okay, so your turn. Write an opening paragraph for your current WIP or one that's buried in your drawer. Leave one and I'll enter your name in drawing for a promotional mug.
